Hi! Today I wanted to talk about one of my favourite appetizers that you can order in most of Spanish restaurants and beach chiringuitos – calamari. So let’s see what calamari is. Many people think that it is a separate species of sea animals but actually this is not the case. Calamari is in fact the edible part of squid!
Like with many other ingredients calamari can be either good or bad for you. It depends entirely on how you prepare it. For example here in Spain they usually offer fried calamari dipped in butter, milk and flour and then deep fry it. In this case you can not really say that it is very good for your health. Specially if you’re trying to lose weight. On another hand if you skip the breading and deep frying part it will be one of the healthiest snacks or appetizers ever!
Squid is super high in protein about 16-18 g per 100 g. In red meat it is 20-24 grams per 100 g.So not bad at all! And if you compare the price of quality red meat and squids then you can see that it is a great alternative for less money. It also contains all nine amino acids and Omega-3 fatty acids. There is good amount of minerals like choline, that is important for our brain and liver health. Another important mineral in squid is Selenium that is very beneficial for our immune system. Last but not the least is copper. It plays important role in our bone health. 100 grams of calamari provides us 1.9 mg of copper and that is 95% of our daily recommended intake.

Calamari With Red Chilli And Garlic
- 250 grams of calamari (cleaned)
- 1 whole red hot chilli pepper
- 4 gloves of garlic
- extra virgin olive oil
- Wash your squids and dry them with kitchen paper.
- Slice the “bodies” into mouthful pieces.
- Now chop garlic gloves into fine slices.
- Remove seeds from the chilli pepper and slice it.
- Pre-heat the pan to a high temperature.
- Add olive oil, garlic, hot pepper and calamari.
- Fry about 3-4 minutes, if you fry calamari too long it will be hard and rubbery.
- Serve with fresh parsley or dill.
